Are you planning to cross the Alps this summer on the Alpe-Adria Cycle Path? The route from Salzburg or Villach down to the Adriatic is a true classic for a reason. However, for your return journey this year, there is a significant restriction that you must factor into your schedule.
The Situation
The so-called Pontebbana line between Tarvisio (Tarvisio Boscoverde) and Udine will be completely closed to all rail traffic in late summer due to extensive construction work. This affects regional services (such as the popular Micotra train) as well as long-distance services (Railjet) connecting Graz and Vienna with Venice or Trieste.
Key Dates of the Closure:
Period: August 22nd to September 20th, 2026.
Affected Section: Tarvisio Boscoverde – Udine (partially extending to Gemona/Carnia).
Affected Trains: All connections on this axis, including bike-specific shuttles and international long-distance trains.
What This Means for Cyclists
First, the good news: A rail replacement bus service (SEV) will be established. The Friuli-Venezia Giulia region and ÖBB (Austrian Railways) are currently finalizing the details.
Keep the following in mind:
Longer Travel Times: Factor in significantly more time for your return journey. Buses on public roads are much slower than the train on the high-speed line.
Limited Bicycle Capacity: The capacity for bikes in replacement buses is often considerably lower than on trains (especially compared to the Micotra train with its dedicated bike carriage).
Mandatory Reservations: It is highly likely that bike reservations for the replacement service will be mandatory or at least strongly recommended. Be sure to check this via the ÖBB app or website in advance.
The Alternative: If you’re feeling fit, you can simply cycle this stretch yourself—the route through the Canal Valley on the converted old railway line is one of the most beautiful sections anyway! However, if you rely on the train, keep a close eye on the late August/September period.
Looking Ahead: More Construction to Come
The modernization of the line is a long-term project. Closures have already been announced for the coming years as well:
2027: Closure from May 26th to July 9th (impacting the early season).
2028: Closure for the entire month of September.
Our Tip: If you are planning your trip for this summer, check your return options now using the ÖBB trip planner (Scotty).
