Murradweg in Graz and Gössendorf: More Space for Pedaling!
Dear BIKEGRAZ community, there’s great news for all cycling enthusiasts in Graz and surroundings lovers! The popular Murradweg is getting a major upgrade in several spots – making your ride even more pleasant, safer, and more comfortable. So, saddle up, helmet on, and eyes open – here’s an overview of the latest expansion stages along the Mur river.
Expansion in Graz-Liebenau and Gössendorf: More Room for Cyclists
Anyone who knows the Murradweg between Graz and Gössendorf will recall that especially near the entrance to the Auwiesen (Graz-Liebenau), things got a bit tight from time to time. At the same time, the section between the motorway underpass and Gössendorfer Sattlerstraße was a nerve-wracking experience for some cyclists. Those problems are now history!
- Around 600 meters of the path have been renovated and widened jointly by the municipalities of Graz and Gössendorf – nearly 400 meters of that is in Gössendorf.
- The formerly narrow section of the main cycling route 8 (HR8) at the Auwiesen entrance is now significantly more spacious.
- The cycle path from the motorway underpass to Sattlerstraße has also been widened – plenty of space now to comfortably ride side-by-side or to take a relaxed break in nature.
Widening up to the City Limits: Puntigamer Side Gets a Makeover
The Holding Graz Water Management has been working since May to renew the transport pipeline Feldkirchen (TL 700) between Karlauergürtel and the Feldkirchen waterworks.
But that’s not all: Apparently, during digging, it became clear that the Murradweg also needed a bit more love! That’s why between Lagergasse and the city limits, a thorough clean-up and widening is happening in three sections.
This means more comfort, safety, and a nicer ride along the Mur meadows for all cyclists on the Puntigamer side.
New Bridge Connects Murfeld and Feldkirchen
Real bridges – literally and figuratively – are happening in the south: About two kilometers south of the Gasrohrsteg, a brand-new bridge over the Mur is being built near the motorway bridge.
It will soon connect Murfeld in Liebenau with Feldkirchen. A perfect addition to the bike path network expansion that will thrill not only commuters but also leisure riders.
Conclusion: Graz Keeps Pedaling Forward
With these measures, Graz once again shows: Cycling is not only trendy, but increasingly a real means of transport – whether for commuting or a relaxed après-ride tour through nature.
More space, better infrastructure, and a new, important bridge ensure that we all want to pedal even more now. Transport policy with momentum – and that’s something we can happily applaud with a small cycling gesture.
So folks, get on your bikes – and show us your favorite moments on the freshly expanded Murradweg! Post your photos or videos with the hashtag #BIKEGRAZaufTour on Instagram or Bluesky. We can’t wait to see where you love to cycle most in Graz and Gössendorf!
