A Pilgrimage Cycling Route for the Soul: From Graz to Mariazell!
Dear cycling friends, have you heard? Styria has opened its very first pilgrimage cycling route! On May 9, 2026, the “Styrian Mariazell Way” was officially inaugurated, and I must say, it sounds like a wonderful adventure for us Graz cyclists.
It is a proud distance of 130 kilometers that connects Graz with the famous pilgrimage site of Mariazell. Even though the official route starts in the Mariazell region and ends in Graz, it is clear: Those who want to pilgrimage will set off from Graz towards Mariazell, right? From our beloved Mur metropolis, you can embark on a journey that takes you through Eastern Styria, the Joglland, and the Hochsteiermark. Imagine cycling leisurely through these beautiful landscapes, breathing in the fresh air and leaving everyday life behind.
The route follows existing cycling paths and is designed so that you can comfortably complete it in two to three days. Perfect for a long weekend in the saddle! Along the way, you will pass through these charming places:
- Passail
- Birkfeld
- Ratten
- Mürzzuschlag
- Neuberg an der Mürz
- Mürzsteg
- Gußwerk
And yes, there will be a few inclines – but hey, that’s what our e-bikes are for, or we take it sportily! A little challenge is part of the deal, especially when you are on a “pilgrimage.” What makes this route particularly appealing are not only the many pilgrimage churches and monasteries that invite you to pause. No, our physical well-being is also well taken care of! Along the way, numerous inns and wine taverns await, eager to serve hungry cyclists like us. Imagine enjoying a hearty snack and a glass of cider after a stage – that’s the perfect reward!
