On Two Wheels Through South Tyrol: The Adige Cycle Path for Graz Explorers

Share:

Dear BikeGraz community, today we’re taking you on a charming, sometimes surprising and above all very relaxed bike trip along one of the most beautiful cycle routes in Italy – the Adige Cycle Path. You might be thinking, “Italy? But we’re from Graz!” Exactly. But especially for a long weekend or a short trip, the Adige Cycle Path is a great destination to push your boundaries, breathe in new landscapes and at the same time soak up a little Italian flair.

What exactly is the Adige Cycle Path?

The Adige Cycle Path (Italian: Ciclovia dell’Adige) follows the Adige River, Italy’s second-longest river, which springs from the Alps and flows through South Tyrol all the way to Verona. The route is mostly flat or gently rolling, making it ideal even for more leisurely riders or families. Over approximately 380 kilometers, the cycle path winds through impressive vineyards, orchards and idyllic medieval towns – a true paradise for cycling enthusiasts who want to combine scenery, culture and culinary highlights.

Why is the Adige Cycle Path ideal for us from Graz?

  • Easy access: From Graz, you can reach South Tyrol quite quickly by train or car, for example to Bolzano, an excellent starting point.
  • Varied landscape: From the alpine charm of the Dolomites to gentle vineyards – it’s all here, and all on bike paths away from motor traffic.
  • Culinary highlights: Fancy speck, cheese, risotto or a glass of Vernatsch? South Tyrolean-Italian cuisine brings the taste of Italy straight to your bike.
  • Family-friendly & relaxed: The route is well developed and not too challenging, perfect for a cycling weekend!

My personal tip: Bolzano to Trento

If you don’t want to ride the entire route (we don’t want to climb the mountain straight away, after all), then the section from Bolzano to Trento is great. Around 60 kilometers with lots of nature, small towns like Salurn and Andrian to unwind in. The route is mostly flat and repeatedly runs along the Adige – almost romantic.

The right gear for the Adige Cycle Path

A few tips so your tour doesn’t turn into a drama:

  • Good bike: A city or trekking bike with decent tires is more than enough.
  • Don’t forget your helmet: Even though the path is mostly protected, safety comes first.
  • Dress for the weather: In the mountains, the weather can change quickly – a lightweight rain jacket is worth its weight in gold.
  • Snacks and water: There are nice places to stop along the way, but a banana and plenty of water never hurt.

A small challenge: Basic Italian course

A little Italian obviously helps, especially if you’re off the beaten tourist paths. But don’t worry, a friendly “Buongiorno” and a “Grazie” almost always open hearts and doors.

Conclusion: A must for outing couch potatoes and adventurers alike

The Adige Cycle Path is a perfect slice of Europe embedded in a fascinating landscape that will put a cycling smile on your face. So pack your bikes, charge your phone’s power bank and head south!

Now it’s your turn: Are you already planning your Adige trip? Or have you perhaps already been there? Share your best snapshots with us – of course with the hashtag #bikegraz on Instagram or Bluesky! We look forward to your pedal adventures.
