Graz on Two Wheels – The Official Top 10
Graz is a UNESCO World Heritage city and one of Austria's most beautiful cities. Nine of the ten official top sights are within easy cycling distance of each other – and one, Schloss Eggenberg, makes for a proper ride. Here are all 10, with cycling tips for each stop.
1. Schlossberg & Clock Tower
Graz's landmark. Cycle to the foot of the hill and walk up, or take the Schlossberglift from the Hauptplatz. The view over the Old Town rooftops is unforgettable. Bike racks at Schlossbergplatz.
2. Kunsthaus Graz
The "friendly alien" at Südtiroler Platz – one of the city's most striking buildings. Easily combined with the Murinsel, just minutes away by bike.
3. Schloss Eggenberg
The most important Baroque palace in Styria, about 3 km west of the city centre – roughly 15 minutes by bike. The palace park with its peacocks is freely accessible and a wonderful cycling destination. Route via Eggenberger Allee: flat and well-paved.
4. Murinsel
The floating island in the heart of the Mur river, built for the 2003 European Capital of Culture. Reachable via the riverside path in just a few minutes, with a café on the island itself.
5. Landeszeughaus & Landhaushof
The Landeszeughaus holds the world's largest historic armoury – over 32,000 weapons and suits of armour from the 15th–18th centuries. Next door, the Landhaushof is one of the finest Renaissance arcaded courtyards in Europe. Both are a short ride from the Hauptplatz.
6. Glockenspiel
Three times daily (11am, 3pm, 6pm), small doors open on the Glockenspielplatz façade and two figures in traditional Graz costume dance to music. A charming moment in the heart of the Old Town.
7. Graz Cathedral
A 15th-century Gothic cathedral, one of the most important in Styria. Don't miss the "Landplagenbild" on the outer wall – an unusual late medieval fresco. Located directly next to the Mausoleum.
8. Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II
The finest Early Baroque building in the German-speaking world, right next to the Cathedral. Often overlooked by visitors – don't make that mistake.
9. Double Spiral Staircase (Grazer Burg)
One of the most impressive Gothic staircases in Europe – two spiral staircases that wind upward without touching. Hidden in the courtyard of the Grazer Burg, directly opposite the Cathedral. Free entry.
10. Hauptplatz & Town Hall
The heart of Graz's Old Town. The Renaissance Town Hall and colourful house façades make this the ideal starting point for any tour. Park your bike at the edge and explore the Old Town lanes on foot.
