Like the Kunsthaus, the Murinsel was created in the year of the European Capital of Culture 2003. The New York artist and architect Vito Acconci designed the floating platform in the shape of a half-open shell, which is connected to both banks of the Mur by two walkways. The 47-meter-long steel structure houses a café, a small amphitheater, and a play area – and for the first time in decades, it created direct access to the river in the middle of the city. At night, lighting bathes the island in blue-green light. The Murinsel symbolically represents the rediscovery of the Mur as a living space: The Murradweg R2 runs right past it, crossing the city from north to south and making the island one of the most beautiful stops on any cycling tour through Graz.
