Landhaus und Landhaushof

The Renaissance arcade courtyard of the steirischen Landhaus is among the most beautiful inner courtyards in Central Europe.

History

The Landhaus in der Herrengasse was built from 1557 according to plans by the Italian architect Domenico dell'Allio and is one of the most significant Renaissance buildings in Austria. For over 450 years, the Styrian estates have convened here – to this day, it is the seat of the Landtag Steiermark. The heart of the building is the three-story arcade courtyard, which is considered one of the most beautiful Renaissance inner courtyards in Central Europe with its elegant colonnades. In summer, it becomes a charming stage for concerts and theater, while during Advent, the ice crib transforms it into a magnet for visitors. Also worth seeing are the bronze fountain from 1590 in the courtyard and the magnificent portal to Herrengasse. Directly connected is the Landeszeughaus – together, the buildings form the historical power center of Styria in the middle of the pedestrian zone.
