On the Austein, a rocky hill on the right bank of the Mur in the district of Lend, the Jesuits began constructing one of the oldest Calvary mountain complexes in Austria in 1606. Along the slope, there are Stations of the Cross chapels, the Holy Stairs, and groups of sculptures, which continue to be destinations for pilgrimages during the Passion season; at the summit stands the Trinity Church with its distinctive crucifixion group. The complex was further expanded in the Baroque period and shapes the silhouette of the northern part of the city. From the top, there is a beautiful, often underestimated view over Graz – from the Schlossberg to the towers of the old town. The Calvary Mountain is only a few hundred meters away from the Murradweg and can be easily incorporated into a cycling route through Lend and Gösting.
