The Kaiser-Josef-Platz directly behind the opera has been the site of Graz's largest farmers' market since 1863. Named after Emperor Joseph II., whose monument once stood here, the square quickly developed into the most important food market of the growing city. To this day, about a hundred vendors offer their goods from Monday to Saturday: fruits and vegetables from the Grazer Feld, pumpkin seed oil, beet beans, flowers, bread, and much more – a showcase of Styrian agriculture in the heart of the city. Around the market, cafés and delicatessens have settled, where Graz's market tradition meets urban breakfast flair. The square is located on the cycling axis between Jakominiplatz and the university district; those who cycle by in the morning experience the market at its liveliest hour.
