The Universalmuseum Joanneum was founded in 1811 by Archduke Johann and is the oldest public museum in Austria. Its historic core is located between Raubergasse and Neutorgasse: the baroque Lesliehof building, where the technical university also began. For the anniversary year 2011, the architects Nieto Sobejano, together with eep architekten, transformed the courtyards into the Joanneumsviertel: An underground visitor center with distinctive funnel-shaped light wells has since connected three buildings into a museum quarter. Here you will find the Neue Galerie with art from the 19th to the 21st century, the Naturkundemuseum, the CoSA – Center of Science Activities, and the Steiermärkische Landesbibliothek. The square at Kalchberggasse is car-free and easily accessible by bike – right in the middle of the southern old town district.
