Herz-Jesu-Kirche

The neo-Gothic Herz-Jesu-Kirche has the third highest church tower in Austria, measuring 109.6 meters.

History

The Herz-Jesu-Kirche in the St. Leonhard district is the largest church in Graz and one of the most significant neo-Gothic buildings in Austria. It was built from 1881 to 1887 according to plans by Georg Hauberrisser, who also designed the New Town Hall in Munich. Its tower rises 109.6 meters into the sky, making it the third tallest church tower in Austria – after the Vienna St. Stephen's Cathedral and the New Cathedral in Linz. Characteristic is the visible brick construction made of red bricks, which gives the area around the church its character. Inside, the high nave, the colored stained glass windows, and the neo-Gothic furnishings impress. The church is easily accessible from the cycling routes through St. Leonhard and from the Stadtpark, and thanks to its tower, it serves as a reliable landmark in the eastern part of the city.
