Hauptplatz und Rathaus

The heart of Graz's old town: the medieval main square with the Erzherzog-Johann fountain and the historicist town hall.

History

The Hauptplatz was established around 1160 under the Traungauers as a marketplace and has been the center of urban life for over 850 years. In its center, the Erzherzog-Johann-Brunnen from 1878 commemorates the popular Habsburg who modernized Styria; the four female figures symbolize the rivers Mur, Enns, Drau, and Sann. The southern side is dominated by the Rathaus, which was built in the style of historicism from 1888 to 1893. The baroque facades of the Bürgerhäuser are also worth seeing, especially the Luegg-Haus at the corner of Sporgasse with its rich stucco decoration from the 17th century. Almost all tram lines of the city roll over the square, and the stalls with Styrian specialties make it a marketplace in the best sense to this day.
