Grazer Schlossberg

The local mountain in the middle of the city: 473 meters high, with a clock tower, bell tower, gardens, and the most beautiful view over the rooftops of Graz.

History

The Schlossberg is the origin of Graz: The name of the city is derived from the Slavic word "gradec" (small castle). From the 12th century, a castle stood here, which was expanded in the 16th century into one of the strongest fortifications in Europe – it was considered impregnable and was not conquered even by Napoleon's troops in 1809. Only after the Treaty of Schönbrunn did the fortress have to be demolished; the Uhrturm and Glockenturm were bought free by the citizens of Graz and remained preserved. In the 19th century, Ludwig von Welden transformed the mountain into a romantic landscape park. Today, the Kriegssteig with 260 steps, the Schlossbergbahn, and a lift inside the mountain lead to the plateau. At the top, the Kasematten await as an open-air stage, gastronomy, and a wide view extending to the Grazer Bergland – and by bike, one can easily reach the foot of the mountain via the Murradweg.
