Glockenturm „Liesl“

The octagonal bell tower on the Schlossberg houses the "Liesl," the third largest bell in Styria, weighing over four tons.

History

The octagonal bell tower was built in 1588 under Archduke Karl II and is, alongside the Uhrturm, the second preserved structure of the former Schlossberg fortress. Inside hangs the "Liesl," a bell cast in 1587 weighing around 4.6 tons – the third largest bell in Styria. According to legend, it was cast from 101 Turkish cannonballs, which is why it still rings three times a day with exactly 101 strokes: at 7, 12, and 19 o'clock. Like the Uhrturm, the bell tower was also purchased by the citizens of Graz in 1809 to prevent its destruction by Napoleon's troops. At the base of the tower, there used to be a prison called the "Bassgeigenstöckl." The tower stands at the highest point of the Schlossberg near the mountain station of the Schlossbergbahn.
