The Gemalte Haus at Herrengasse 3, also known as Herzogshof, was once a princely possession and a lodging for the dukes when they stayed in Graz. Its facade was painted in 1742 by Johann Mayer with frescoes: on more than 220 square meters, Greek-Roman gods and allegorical scenes come to life – a baroque world of images in the middle of the shopping street. The house had already been painted in the 16th century, and the current design replaced the older paintings. According to tradition, the city lord resided here during the Middle Ages; the building is one of the oldest documented houses in the city. Those strolling through Herrengasse should look up – the Gemalte Haus is just a few steps away from the Hauptplatz and is easily overlooked, although it is one of the most original sights in the old town.
