Referendum „Free Right of Way for Mountain Bikes“ – Let’s Have a Discussion!

Dear BikeGraz community, there’s news from the world of two-wheelers that could affect us all: The referendum „Free Right of Way for Mountain Bikes“ is up for discussion. But what exactly is behind it and why should we care?

What is the referendum about?

Simply put: It’s about mountain bikers gaining more rights on forest trails. Currently, many paths in the forests around Graz and elsewhere are officially only open for walking or agricultural use. This means many mountain bikers face closed gates or ride hesitantly on singletracks—out of consideration or fear of penalties.

The referendum wants to change that by demanding that cyclists—especially mountain bikers—officially get the right to ride on forest trails, under three conditions:

  • With a suitable bike: This is not a free pass for motorized fun machines or Mars-rover-like tire widths. The bike should fit the terrain.
  • By experienced cyclists: Safety first! Those who can’t control their bike shouldn’t cause accidents.
  • Yielding to pedestrians: Pedestrians continue to have priority on the trails. Conflicts should be avoided—we want peaceful coexistence, not a “mud fight”.

What does it take to make this happen?

A referendum is basically a citizen-driven legislative process where many people express their support for a law change by signing. To be successful, at least 100,000 valid signatures are required throughout Austria. That sounds like a lot, but it’s doable—especially if we come together as an engaged community!

The goal: Forest and forestry paths should be legally regulated so that mountain bikers can ride officially and safely—with respect and responsibility. This can help reduce conflicts, better connect nature conservation and sport, and diversify recreational activities.

What’s your opinion?

Now we’re curious: What do you think about the referendum? Are you totally in favor, somewhat skeptical, or maybe completely against it? What experiences have you had mountain biking in Graz’s forests? Does cycling on forest trails deserve an official place, or should we continue to give pedestrians priority and approach cycling on these paths with caution?

Write your thoughts, experiences, and suggestions in the comments, because especially when it comes to mountain biking: Together we get further—and sometimes off the beaten track! 😉
