Fall with Bicycle: Graz Cyclist to Pay Fine – Really?
A Graz cyclist who was injured in a fall with his racing bike is now also supposed to pay a fine of 50 euros. A report that leaves us cyclists in Graz speechless!
The Kleine Zeitung reports on this incredible incident: Our Graz colleague was out riding his racing bike, overlooked an edge, and fell. He was injured in the process – bad enough when you fall without fault. But then came the shock: The police claim he was going too fast and chose his speed incorrectly, which led to the fall. The consequence? A fine of 50 euros!
One can easily imagine how astonished the affected cyclist is about this fine. He has, of course, filed an appeal. And he is not the only one shaking his head. Experts are also surprised by this measure, especially since the accident occurred without any external involvement and the exact cause – overlooking an edge – is clearly stated.
It is also interesting that the police do not keep statistics on such incidents, even though a similar case was reported recently. That certainly raises eyebrows, doesn’t it? We wonder how someone from some office at the Landespolizeidirektion can retrospectively assess whether the speed was appropriate. Is there perhaps an e-scooter rider sitting there who cannot quite gauge our cycling speeds? A rascal thinks ill of it!
