Schmiedgasse: 90 organ mandates in a fortnight

Checks in Schmiedgasse: Initial findings

For just under two weeks now, the ban on cycling in Graz’s Schmiedgasse has been strictly enforced. This measure, designed to safeguard the pedestrian zone in the heart of the city, is already having a clear impact.

The initial results of the checks are clear: 90 fines have already been issued to cyclists who have failed to comply with the ban. This is a considerable number for such a short period and underlines that the police are taking the matter seriously.

Schmiedgasse, an important link between Hauptplatz and Freiheitsplatz, is designated as a pedestrian zone. The cycling ban there is not new, but the intensity of enforcement has noticeably increased. For many, the street is an attractive, if short, route through the city centre. However, particularly at peak times, the high volume of pedestrians can lead to dangerous situations here.

This shows once again how important it is to pay close attention to signage and the conditions in the city centre. Even if it sometimes seems like a slight detour, such regulations serve the safety of all road users.
