Perfect, because on Sunday, August 2, there’s a unique chance to explore the UNESCO World Heritage site completely for free! The traditional Open House invites you under the motto “ZOOM IN. The Art of Looking Closer,” and this is the ideal opportunity to hop on your bike and soak up some culture, right?
This year, everything revolves around the small, fine details that are often overlooked on the first visit. Imagine this: You leisurely bike to the castle, park your bicycle, and then dive into the state rooms, the famous Planetensaal, the Alte Galerie, the Archaeological Museum, and the Münzkabinett. Exciting stories about art, history, and architecture await you everywhere, bringing you closer to the hidden gems. And for those who want to know how a World Heritage site is maintained, there’s an information station about restoration – there’s a lot of work involved to ensure that our grandchildren can enjoy it too.
Of course, there are also special treasures to discover. In the Alte Galerie, for example, you can take a close look at the still lifes of the Dutch painter Pieter Claesz. The Archaeological Museum features extraordinary finds and the special exhibition “Graz 1699,” which shows us what our city looked like back then – surely very different from what you see today from your bike! And in the Münzkabinett, there are not only rare coins but also the special exhibition “The Flourishing Language of Money.” You can ponder how much a bike would have cost back in the day.
