Repairs & Detours: What the Specialty Bike Shops Say About Bike Infrastructure

Cycling through Graz – usually pure enjoyment. But at the moment, one might almost think they’re playing some kind of “bicycle odyssey”: construction sites here, road closures there, and suddenly you face an unexpected obstacle forcing you onto costly detours. Annoying? Definitely. But not unusual, as representatives from the local bike shops report to us.

The local bike shop pros have given this some thought – and their assessment is less charming than a fresh flat tire on a Monday morning. “The situation for cyclists in Graz has noticeably worsened in recent months due to construction sites,” is the unanimous opinion. There is a lack of consistent implementation of the Mobility Strategy 2020, which was actually supposed to massively promote and make cycling safer.

Why the Construction Sites Persist and What That Means

Construction sites are unfortunately nothing new when it comes to cycling – but currently, they complicate traffic so much that many cyclists are forced to take longer detours or look for dangerous stretches. This quickly leads to frustration and diminishes the joy of cycling.

  • Missing detour signs: Clear guidance for cyclists on how to safely pass construction sites is often lacking.
  • Inadequate bike lanes: Some construction sites cause bike lanes to disappear entirely or be merged onto the roadway, endangering safety.
  • Coordination of construction sites: Multiple construction sites at the same time without coordinated planning lead to chaos in the city center or on main cycling routes – with waiting times and long offroad sections.

The Warning from the Specialty Bike Shops

The Graz bike shop experts see this as a problem that goes beyond mere inconvenience. “If we frustrate cyclists with detours and poorly secured construction sites, many use their bike less often – or even switch to the car,” warns an experienced workshop manager. “This endangers progress in terms of sustainability and traffic relief.”

Many shop owners therefore wish that the city administration and responsible authorities finally take the bike infrastructure seriously in construction projects. Because the bicycle must not be a stumbling block for mobility but must be reliably and safely integrated into the traffic mix.

More Cycling – Less Stress!

Graz has the potential to become a true bike city – there are plenty of beautiful bike routes, the infrastructure is steadily being expanded, but only if cyclists don’t constantly get blocked by construction site closures. Good planning and clear communication are the be-all and end-all here.

Dear city officials: Next time you plan a construction site, try to see it from a cyclist’s perspective. A little more signage, a safe detour, or temporary bike lanes can work wonders – and prevent people from choosing to take the tram or start the car next time.
