Bike counting points in Graz: Our bikes count!

Have you ever wondered how many of us actually get around on two wheels every day? I mean, we know the Graz cycling community is huge, but exactly how many? And where is it busiest?

For some time now, there have been these cycle counting stations in Graz that help us find out exactly that. Five cycle paths are being closely monitored – or rather, counted. Do you know them? For example, on Körösistraße, which is an important route for many people looking to get through the city quickly, or in the lovely Augarten, where you can cycle at a leisurely pace and enjoy nature. And of course at the Stadtpark, where many paths cross and there’s always a lot of activity.

This is absolutely vital so that city planners know how our cycling infrastructure is actually being used. Where is it busy? Where might we need more space or better connections? Imagine thousands of people cycling along there, and the figures then showing that we need more safe routes. It’s basically our voices being counted there, just on wheels.

I always find it exciting when I cycle past one of those counters. Sometimes I think to myself: ‘Aha, another one added to the stats!’ It also gives us a sense of just how vibrant our cycling community is. And it shows that cycling in Graz is no longer a niche activity, but an integral part of city life. The data collected there is worth its weight in gold for future planning. Who knows what new cycle paths or improvements await us thanks to these insights! Perhaps even on the Murradweg, where there’s always plenty going on, or in other areas that haven’t been the focus of attention so far.

What do you think of the counting stations? Have you ever noticed one? Or do you have ideas about where more should be installed to gather important data? Share your thoughts and cycling experiences with us on Instagram and Bluesky using #bikegraz! We can’t wait to hear your stories!
