Petition for the HR7: Traffic Ban on Neufeldweg Demanded

Anyone who regularly travels on the Main Bicycle Route 7 (HR7) through Liebenau is likely already familiar with the issue: Neufeldweg is part of an important cycling connection between Graz and Raaba – at the same time, the motorized through traffic there has been a topic of discussion for some time.

We at BikeGraz have also reported that the traffic calming measures around Neufeldweg have not had the desired effect everywhere. Now, residents want to take another step and have started a petition.

Demand: Traffic Ban for Motor Vehicles

Under the title “Save the HR7 at Neufeldweg in Liebenau – YES to the Traffic Ban – finally safe cycling!” the initiators are demanding a traffic ban for motor vehicles on Neufeldweg.

The goal: Neufeldweg should become less attractive for motorized through traffic or no longer be usable as a through route, while the connection for cyclists remains intact.

After all, Neufeldweg is not just any side street in the Graz cycling network. It is part of the Main Bicycle Route 7, which leads from Jakominiplatz through the southern part of Graz to Raaba.

The city of Graz is also already dealing with the situation. As part of the planned traffic calming in the Harmsdorf-ORF district, the road space on Neufeldweg is to be gradually designed for pedestrians and cyclists. According to the city, the aim of the measures is to further reduce traffic volume, lower speeds, and make the main bicycle route safer and more attractive.

The Initiators Think This Is Not Enough

The residents behind the petition see a traffic ban for motor vehicles as the more effective solution to actually get through traffic out of Neufeldweg.

Their argument: A main bicycle route should be a connection where one enjoys riding a bike – and not a stretch where cyclists have to share their space with cars that mainly use Neufeldweg as a shortcut.

Or, to put it less in planning terms: A main bicycle route should also feel like a main bicycle route.

Petition Can Be Supported Online

Anyone who wants to support the residents' demand can sign the petition online. According to the initiators, it takes about two minutes and is free of charge.

And of course, as always with such initiatives: Anyone who wants to support the cause can also share the link with other cyclists, residents, and interested parties.
