Commuting in Graz: Spring tips for cyclists

Hello, dear BikeGraz community!

April is here, and with it the capricious spring weather of Graz. One day bright sunshine, the next drizzling rain. Sound familiar? For us cycle commuters in particular, this is often a challenge. But don’t worry, I’ve got a few fresh tips for you to ensure your ride through Graz stays smooth in April 2026!

1. The layer principle is your friend

Chilly in the morning, T-shirt weather by midday. Or the other way round! It’s best to pack a few extra layers. A lightweight rain jacket that you can slip on quickly is worth its weight in gold. And don’t forget your gloves – especially if you’re out early or the wind is howling, cold fingers can really spoil the ride.

2. Keep your eyes peeled and ears pricked!

Graz is becoming increasingly bike-friendly, but there’s always a lot going on, especially in the city centre, around the main square or in Herrengasse. Stay alert, particularly when pedestrians suddenly change direction. A friendly ring of the bell often works wonders and helps avoid tricky situations. And don’t forget: even though the Mur Cycle Path often feels like a motorway – there are others out and about who might not be as fast as you.

3. Make your bike weatherproof

Rain, grit, dirt – your bike has to put up with a lot. Check your brakes and lights regularly. Especially with the changeable light conditions in spring, it’s really important that you’re clearly visible. A small squirt of oil on the chain after a ride in the rain keeps it smooth and rust-free.

4. Discover alternative routes

Sure, the Murradweg is great, but sometimes it’s nice to have a change. Do you know the side streets that might take you through the city a bit more quietly? Or the little alleys you’d otherwise overlook? Sometimes you discover the prettiest spots there, or the quickest way to avoid rush-hour traffic. A glance at the map often reveals new possibilities.

5. Make clever use of parking spaces

Especially in the city centre, the search for a good parking spot can be a pain. Make use of the numerous bike racks available. And if you’re parking for longer, invest in a good lock. Better safe than sorry!

Whether you cycle to work every day or just now and then – enjoy the fresh air and the exercise. Experiencing Graz from the saddle of a bike is still the best way to go!
