Neufeldweg: When Traffic Calming Backfires
On Neufeldweg in Graz, things are getting hectic again, but unfortunately not in a positive way. The residents are mobilizing because the traffic calming measures that the city announced almost exactly two years ago have somehow gone completely wrong.
Imagine living on a street that is supposed to be calmed, and in the end, you have even more traffic, no decent sidewalks and bike paths, and no parking spaces for the residents. That’s exactly what happened on Neufeldweg. The city of Graz announced almost exactly two years ago that they would tackle this issue, but the renovations have only led to an increase in traffic. Now they are examining what can still be changed, while the people there are already taking matters into their own hands.
Sometimes you wonder how such things can happen when you actually intend to do something good. For us cyclists, it’s doubly bitter when promised bike paths are simply missing or the situation even worsens. Take a look at the situation on Neufeldweg yourself and form your own opinion.
