New Laimburggasse Bicycle Street: Final Plans and Political Debate

Laimburggasse Becomes a Bicycle Street: What's Behind It?

Time for another update from the Graz cycling world! You know how much we love new bike paths and improvements. This time, it's about Laimburggasse, and the news is quite exciting.

The final plans for its transformation into a bicycle street have been presented. It's supposed to kick off this summer! Imagine, an entire street that belongs to us cyclists – at least prioritized. That sounds great, right?

Costs, Criticism, and Controversies

But wait, there's always the other side of the coin. The project is expected to cost a hefty 800,000 Euros. And as is often the case in politics, criticism immediately follows. The ÖVP is attacking it, calling it a “green prestige project” and claiming it's wrongly prioritized. Sometimes you wonder if a safe bike path is a prestige project or just good infrastructure, right? It reminds you of some discussions on Hauptplatz when traffic is debated again.

And of course, the transformation is also a hot topic among residents. That's almost always the case when something changes. Whether it's parking spaces, deliveries, or simply habit playing a role, we don't know in detail. But it shows that such projects always spark many opinions.

Our Take on the Development

It's always exciting to see how such projects make waves in Graz. On one hand, the joy about more space and safety for us cyclists, on the other hand, the discussions about costs and priorities. It's important that we, as the BikeGraz community, stay informed and engaged. Maybe Laimburggasse will soon become a new gem on our bike map, similar to the Murradweg, which also wasn't perfect overnight.

What do you think about the plans for Laimburggasse? Share your opinion, your bike tours, or just a photo of your bike in Graz with us on Instagram or Bluesky using #bikegraz! We're curious!
