New exhibition: Who invented the bicycle?

Who invented it? The bicycle at the frida&fried Children’s Museum!

Hey there! Imagine cycling through Graz every day, along the Mur Cycle Path or up to the Schlossberg – we often take our beloved bikes for granted, don’t we? But have you ever wondered who actually invented this brilliant thing and how it all began?

That’s exactly the question the frida&fried Children’s Museum is exploring! They’ve launched a brand-new exhibition that delves deep into the history of the bicycle’s invention. I think it’s absolutely fascinating that you can explore why the bike looked the way it did at the start, and how it has developed over the years. From the first walking machines to penny-farthing bicycles and then to our modern speedsters, which we use to whizz through Herrengasse today.

It’s fascinating that such a simple idea – two wheels, a frame, pedals – has changed the world so much, isn’t it? And especially here in Graz, where we have such a vibrant cycling culture, it makes sense to take a look at its roots. Perhaps you’ll see your own bike in a whole new light afterwards, once you know whose minds and hands tinkered with it so that we can get about so comfortably today.

Even though the name ‘Children’s Museum’ might suggest otherwise, I’m sure there’s plenty there to amaze us ‘big kids’ too. A brilliant opportunity to spend an afternoon exploring the history of our bikes – without a handlebar in hand, but with plenty of curiosity. Who knows, maybe we’ll discover the ancestor of our own city runabout!
