GRAZER MITTE: A plan for more cycling in the city!

Share:

Have you heard about the latest plans for our lovely Graz city centre? The cycling advocacy group ARGUS Steiermark recently (on 30 March, to be precise) presented an exciting concept called 'GRAZER MITTE'. And this could be really interesting for us cyclists!

GRAZER MITTE: Your city, reimagined!

Imagine our central Graz being divided into four sectors. It sounds a bit like a maths lesson at first, but the idea behind it is clever: as a cyclist, you should be able to move directly and easily between these sectors. No detours, no unnecessary hassle. Just hop on your bike and off you go!

The exciting part is how car traffic is to be managed: between the districts, it would be routed via the Graz Ring Road. In plain language, that means: fewer cars struggling through the city centre, and thus potentially more space and peace and quiet for us cyclists. Imagine how much more relaxed a ride from the university district to Griesplatz or from the Lend district to Jakominiplatz could be if through traffic were diverted round the outside. That would be something, wouldn’t it?

This concept is still in its infancy – it was only presented at the end of March. But it gives us a taste of what future cycling infrastructure and planning in Graz might look like. It’s an important step towards thinking about how we can make our city even more vibrant, greener and, above all, more cycle-friendly. Less congestion, more fresh air, and perhaps even more reasons to simply leave the car behind and hop on a bike. Who wouldn’t be delighted by a relaxed starting point on the Murr Cycle Route that’s even easier to reach?

Of course, this is a big plan and there will certainly be plenty of discussion to come. But we’re heading in the right direction: Graz should be a city where cycling isn’t just possible, but the first choice. A city where you feel safe and at ease, whether you’re cycling to the main square, the farmers’ market at Lendplatz, or simply going for a spin.

What do you think of these plans? Does that sound like a good idea for our Graz? Let us know how you envisage the future of cycling in our city!
