Grazer Landhaus: When the Bike Stays Outside, the Time Travel Begins

For all cyclists in the Graz community who also like to leave their bike standing sometimes (don't worry, we get it!), we have a cultural tip today that fits a city stroll just as well as a ride around Graz: the Grazer Landhaus. Admittedly, the bike has to stay outside – it’s time for a little break from pedaling. But don’t worry, the Landhaus gives you plenty of reasons to lock up your bike properly and dive right in.

A Renaissance Treasure – History You Can Touch

The Landhaus was built between 1527 and 1531 and is considered one of the most important Renaissance buildings in Austria. The main wing was constructed from 1557 onwards according to the plans of the architect Domenice dell'Allio. The architectural style exudes elegance and symmetry. Originally intended as the seat of the Styrian state government, much has happened here – from a political stage to a cultural center.

Arcade Courtyard – An Open Gem

The centerpiece for all architecture lovers is probably the almost magical arcade courtyard. Imagine standing amidst intricately decorated arches gently embracing a peaceful inner courtyard – right in Graz, a city otherwise known for its hustle and bustle. In summer, events and gentle sun rays often invite you to linger here, and in winter you can visit the famous Eiskrippe.

Knights’ Hall and Landstube Wing – History Comes Alive

If you get the chance to join one of the tours through the Landhaus, the Knights’ Hall is an absolute highlight. Originally used for lavish celebrations, the hall impresses with its ornately painted walls and grand architecture. Surrounded by elegant wooden beams and historic details, you almost feel like a knight – or at least like someone with a very important appointment.

Right next door is the Landstube wing, which surprises with its cozy atmosphere. This area was mainly used in the past for smaller meetings and gatherings. Today, you can almost breathe in the history and feel how politics and tradition once merged here.

The Styrian State Parliament Chamber: Politics Live (Almost)

Of course, the Landhaus remains the political heart to this day – the Styrian State Parliament chamber is the place where important decisions for our region are made. Here, democracy becomes tangible, even if it sometimes proceeds at a somewhat slower pace – unlike cycling.

Conclusion: A Must for Culture Enthusiasts (and Cyclists Who Need a Break)

Even though you can’t cruise through the halls of the Grazer Landhaus on your bike (unfortunately!), stopping here is a treat for mind and soul. Architecture, history, and political atmosphere offer a perfect pause between tours across the streets of Graz.

So: park your bike, soak up some culture, and pedal on with fresh eyes!

And now it’s your turn: Post your best moments around the Landhaus with the hashtag #BIKEGRAZLandhaus on Instagram or Bluesky. We’re excited to see your pictures – and maybe you’ll discover the next hotspot for our community!
