Graz on Two Wheels: Why Your Bike Is the Coolest Way to Get Around Here

Graz without a bike? That’s like a roll without Leberkäse – it works, but you’re definitely missing the best part! Of course, you can get around the Styrian capital by bus, tram, or the seemingly always-full car. But why weave your way through traffic on four wheels when doing it on two is much more fun, healthier – and often even faster?

Cycling in Graz: Zipping Past Trams, Always with a Tailwind

Okay, I admit it: the infamous Graz headwind on the Murinsel heading south isn’t a myth – but the training pays off! Graz doesn’t just offer 130 km of bike lanes, but also some special routes where you can sometimes outpace the tram itself. Here are my personal favorites:

  • The Mur Promenade: Morning sun, ducks, and fresh air – the perfect way to start your day!
  • Through the University Quarter: Always a shortcut between the coffeehouse and the reading room.
  • From Lendplatz to Jakominiplatz: Market shopping, ice cream parlor, then off for a stroll downtown. All in five minutes. Seriously!

Bike Life in Graz: Between Grumblers and Fellow Riders

Of course, not everything is sunshine and roses on the bike paths. Pedestrians who suddenly change lanes, grumblers with headphones who always interpret “left!” as “I’m coming from the right!”, and the legendary Graz pothole slalom all make cycling here an adventure. But that’s exactly what means it’s never boring!

The Best Reasons to Cycle in Graz

  • You save yourself the search for a parking spot (and the awkward dance with the parking meter).
  • Every ride = a free fitness session!
  • You’ll catch up on the latest local news when Grandma Grete spontaneously gets you into a chat at the farmer’s market.
  • In summer: Wind in your hair. In winter: A good excuse for a second piece of cake.
  • Looking for a hilly alternative? The Schlossberg bike route is a free altitude rush (okay, it is a bit of a workout).

My tip: Always set off with a friendly smile and a working bell. If you ride kindly, you’ll almost always get a smile back in Graz – or at least a shrug of the shoulders.

So, get on your bike! Graz is already waiting for your next lap. Who knows – maybe I’ll see you on the Lendkai, and then I’ll definitely pass you on the right!
