A gravel ride around Lake Wörthersee: pure Carinthian delight!
Hello, dear BikeGraz community!
Sometimes you just need a little break from our beautiful Graz, don’t you? Plabutsch is always a good option, but for a proper change of scenery, you sometimes just have to go a bit further afield. And that’s exactly what I treated myself to last weekend: a fantastic gravel ride around Lake Wörthersee. And let me tell you, it was a real treat!
In the morning, I set off in a relaxed mood on the Westbahn from Graz Central Station. With a bike ticket in hand, you’re soon sitting comfortably, looking out of the window and looking forward to what’s to come. The journey to Pörtschach am Wörthersee is half the battle – pure anticipation!
Once I arrived in Pörtschach, I quickly got my gravel tyres on the tarmac and off I went. The route around Lake Wörthersee is famously beautiful, but of course I had a little twist in store for you. Instead of stubbornly rolling along the southern shore, I took the little detour via Lake Keutschach. And let me tell you, that was absolutely the right decision! Less hustle and bustle, more nature, wonderfully quiet paths – exactly what a gravel rider’s heart desires.
The route is a mix of fine gravel, a few forest tracks and short tarmac sections that are perfect for cruising. Time and again, the turquoise-blue waters of Lake Wörthersee glint through the trees, and the air is simply so fresh. At Lake Keutschach, it feels almost like being in another world, it’s so idyllic there. You can really switch off and just let your legs do the work.
After a few hours of pure cycling bliss, with the odd short break for a panoramic photo (or simply to unwind), I was back in Pörtschach. I stowed away the bike, and with a satisfied grin, I hopped back on the Westbahn towards Graz. Back in our city on the Mur, even the Mur Cycle Path feels a bit nicer in the evening when you’ve had a day like that under your belt.
Conclusion: If you fancy a straightforward but incredibly beautiful gravel tour, grab your bike and head to Carinthia! Lake Wörthersee and Lake Keutschacher are waiting for you.
