Gernot Turnowsky: Heart Comeback in the Pamir Mountains

Imagine you have just achieved your life goal, one million kilometers on the bike, and then at the end of 2025, a stroke knocks you out of the saddle. That's exactly what happened to Gernot Turnowsky, but the 56-year-old from Raaba-Grambach didn't let it get him down; on the contrary. Shortly after he gave his impressive presentation in November 2025 about the one million outdoor cycling kilometers, the shock came: a mild stroke, and then the diagnosis – a hole in the heart.

Where others might hang up their bike, Gernot has proven that he is made of tougher stuff than some bike path surfaces in Graz. He has come back stronger than ever and immediately sought out a proper challenge: In hot Tajikistan, he covered 1,100 kilometers and a whopping 11,000 meters of elevation gain. Now that's a statement that shows what can be achieved with iron will, even when life sends you some serious headwinds.

Respect for such a fighting spirit! Maybe this is the motivation you need to tackle your next tour, whether it's to Schöckl or just to Lendplatz for a coffee. #bikegraz
