Bike Tour Without Fixie Fixation: The Relaxed Ride Through the North of Graz
Dear cyclists of BIKEGRAZ, today we’re taking you on a relaxed discovery tour through the less frequented but undeniably charming surroundings north of Graz. Don’t worry, it’s not all uphill and no fixie workout either – just a bit of cruising, fresh air, and maybe even catching a Sunday cake gathering or two.
Why the North?
People often say the best views are only from the Graz Schlossberg. But honestly: who wants a sweat-soaked helmet after climbing up? The northern districts and adjacent neighborhoods offer wonderful gently sloping streets, bike paths through green avenues, and pleasant cafés to stop at. Ideal for anyone looking for enjoyment rather than high speed.
Our Route for a Relaxed Sunday Afternoon
- Start: Bike parking at Keplerplatz. You can also grab the last croissants from the bakery here.
- Along Dechantskirchenstraße: Leisurely roll into the green north, passing small allotment gardens where you briefly feel like you’re at grandma’s countryside.
- Grottenhof: Stop for a short break in one of the hidden spots with a shady beer garden. A bit of cake always goes down well – trust us.
- Bike path along the Mur River: Quietly glide beside the river, where with a bit of luck you can even spot swans or passing paddlers.
- Wetzelsdorf Loop: A small detour through this up-and-coming district with its urban graffiti walls – the perfect backdrop for a cool cyclist photo!
- Return via Andritz: The well-known but not too noisy area, where you come back to the finish at Keplerplatz with the wind in your hair and a smile on your face.
Why We Love This Ride
There are routes where you’re either stuck in a traffic jungle or sweating it out on a hill. This tour is different: you’re outside, see lots of greenery, start and end within the city, enjoy little breaks, and don’t feel like you’re training for an Ironman. Perfect for all who see cycling as leisure fun (not a sports drill).
Last-Minute Tips for the Tour
- Wear a helmet – safety comes first, even on relaxed tours!
- If you like to get off the bike, you can enjoy the cafes and stretch your legs.
- Bring a small camera or phone – the good moments should be captured.
- If you’re out with kids: this route is also perfect for little riders.
So hop on your saddle and try out this “discover the North” trip – we promise you’ll come back relaxed and grinning from ear to ear.
