Bicycle Helmet: More Than Just a Fashion Accessory – and Why You Should Wear It the Right Way Around

Dear BikeGraz community, who hasn’t experienced this? You barely leave the garage, quickly put on your helmet, *click* – and off you go. But honestly: How often has your helmet really felt right? Not just looking good, but also worn the correct way on your head? A helmet worn backward doesn’t help much, except maybe to polarize visually (and mostly in a negative way).

The Bicycle Helmet – Your Head’s Best Friend (When It Fits Right)

A bicycle helmet is not just a stylish gadget to score cool points. No, it’s your guardian angel on two wheels, which in a split second can protect your skull from harsh encounters with asphalt & co. That’s why it should fit properly and – very important – be worn the right way round!

Why the Right Way Around? Doesn’t It Matter?

Doesn’t matter? Think again! Bicycle helmets are not hats that you simply wear whichever way looks best with your outfit. They are specially designed. Most helmets have a front that extends lower to optimally protect your forehead and temples. Additionally, the ventilation holes are arranged to cool best when the helmet is worn correctly.

  • Protective Function: The front part of the helmet is designed to absorb the greatest impact during a fall. If you wear it backward, your forehead is practically unprotected.
  • Comfort and Fit: Worn backwards, it can press or wobble – you feel uncomfortable and get distracted. Concentration while cycling is absolutely essential!
  • Ventilation: The vents are deliberately positioned. They keep your head cool when properly aligned. Twisted around? Then you’ll soon be the hot topic in Graz, literally.

Tips: How to Tell Front from Back?

Often, the front of the helmet is marked with a small label or larger ventilation openings. Little memory aid: The side with the wider padding and usually also the visor (yes, some modern city helmets have one) belongs at the front. Do you have a shaved head or short hair? Then the front often feels a bit “closer to your head.”

The Helmet Fits – Now What?

Once put on the right way, your helmet should fit snugly but not too tight. The chin strap can be adjusted individually. A good test: Open your mouth wide – if the helmet pulls down a bit, the strap is optimally adjusted. Does it feel more like a straitjacket? Loosen it, please!

So, dear BikeGraz friends: Don’t skip your helmet on your next pedal stroke – and make sure you wear it the right way around. Because only then does it really make sense. And who wants to willingly bang their head on the next tram?

Have you ever accidentally worn your helmet “backwards”? Or do you have any funny helmet stories? Share them with us! Post your best bicycle helmet selfies (of course worn correctly) with #BikeGrazHelm on Instagram or Bluesky.
