The Murinsel – a Floating Jewel in the Heart of Graz

Share:

Cycling along the Mur River, you can’t miss it: a futuristic, shimmering structure right in the middle of the water. Welcome to the Murinsel – half island, half artwork, and definitely one of the most unusual spots to take a break.

Why an island in the first place?

The Murinsel was created in 2003, when Graz was named European Capital of Culture. The idea was to build a spectacular, lasting project that would reconnect the city with its river. Instead of just letting the water rush by, Graz placed a floating platform in it – suddenly, the Mur became more than something to cross, it became a place to experience.

The architect: Vito Acconci

The island was designed by American artist and architect Vito Acconci. His vision was to create a hybrid of bridge, meeting point, and event space. The result looks like a giant seashell or half-open spiral, elegantly resting in the river.

What’s there to discover?

The Murinsel is divided into several areas:

  • Café & Bar: Perfect for coffee, cake, or a drink directly above the water.

  • Amphitheater: A small stage with seating steps – ideal for concerts, readings, or simply hanging out.

  • Playground: Even the little ones are entertained, while parents enjoy the view.

  • Walkways: Two bridges connect the island to the riverbanks, making it an easy stop for both cyclists and pedestrians.

A place to enjoy

The Murinsel is especially magical in the evenings: when the lights turn on, it transforms into a glowing sculpture in the river. You feel the current beneath you, hear the sounds of the water, and soak in the unique atmosphere.

By bike to the Murinsel

From the old town, it’s just a few pedal strokes to the island. If you’re cycling the Mur riverside route, you’ll pass right by – the perfect excuse for a short break before heading deeper into the city or out into the countryside.

Conclusion

The Murinsel Graz is more than just an architectural gimmick – it’s a symbol of the city’s close relationship with its river. A place to look, relax, chat, and marvel. In short: a must-stop on any bike tour through Graz.
