Graz's "Rim Killers": A Sore Point for Cyclists!

Who among us doesn't know it? You're cycling leisurely along the Mur, perhaps coming from the Schlossberg or on your way to the Hauptplatz, and you spontaneously decide to quickly pop into one of Graz's shopping centers. Your bike is your loyal companion, your sports equipment, your path to freedom – and then you find yourself facing a bicycle parking facility that looks more like an instrument of torture for two-wheelers than a secure parking spot. We're talking, of course, about the notorious "rim killers"!

These contraptions are simply dreadful. But why?

  • The Problem with "Rim Killers"

They mercilessly clamp your front wheel, potentially bending spokes or, in the worst case, even damaging the rim. It's particularly annoying when you're riding a high-quality bike or simply want to securely park your beloved ride. They offer little protection against theft, as the bike cannot be properly locked, and are often so close together that you can barely fit a second bike next to yours.

  • Why Are They Still There?

It's a mystery why these outdated systems are still in use, especially in a bike-friendly city like Graz, which prides itself on its cycling culture. We have so many great bike paths, like the Murradweg, and a growing cycling community – surely modern, rim-friendly stands should be the standard!

  • What Would Be Better?

We wish for stands where you can securely lock both the frame and, ideally, the front wheel. Ones that are stable, offer enough space, and don't turn our bikes into wobbly candidates. There are so many good examples, even here in Graz, where exemplary parking facilities already exist.

What are your experiences with the rim killers in Graz? Where have you encountered the worst ones, and where are there exemplary parking facilities? Share your thoughts and photos with us on social media using the hashtag #bikegraz! Let's collectively demand a better parking culture in Graz!
