The first kilometers: Gentle but steady
Do you remember our first tips? The most important thing remains: Listen to your body. If you now feel ready to extend the Murradweg loop through the Augarten and along the Grieskai a bit, then May 2026 is the perfect month for it! Instead of just cycling for an hour, try it for 90 minutes or even two hours. For example, you can extend the route south to Kalsdorf or north to Frohnleiten. It’s important not to increase the intensity right away, but to first increase the duration. Stay at a pace where you can still chat easily – that’s your ideal base pace.
A little tip on the side: Don’t hesitate to tackle a small hill. The gentle inclines around Mariatrost or towards Stift Rein are a wonderful way to bring some variety and new stimuli into your training without having to conquer the Plabutsch right away (which is really a different league!).
Your fuel on two wheels: Eating and drinking
The longer the ride, the more important the nutrition becomes. For tours over an hour, you should always have a water bottle with you. After two hours, it’s advisable to think about small snacks as well. Ideal are easily digestible carbohydrates that provide quick energy: a ripe banana, a granola bar, or a small roll. At Lendplatz or Kaiser-Josef-Platz, you’ll find great bakeries where you can grab a delicious energy boost before or during the tour. And don’t forget: Even after the tour is before the tour! A balanced meal with carbohydrates and proteins helps your muscles recover and become stronger.
Recovery is your best friend
Often forgotten, but super important: Recovery! Your muscles need time to recover from exertion and adapt. Treat yourself to plenty of sleep after longer rides and pay attention to light stretching exercises. A leisurely walk the next day can work wonders and promote circulation without overloading the muscles. Remember: Progress happens not only in the saddle but also beside it!
Now you are ready to take your cycling experiences in Graz to the next level. The city and its surroundings are waiting to be discovered by you on new paths!
