Right next to Graz Cathedral you’ll find a building you might not expect in Styria: the Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II.
The first thing you’ll notice are the turquoise domes, standing out against the blue sky. Together with the cathedral and St. Catherine’s Church they create a cityscape that could easily pass for a postcard from Florence. No surprise really – the emperor had good taste. His court painter Giovanni Pietro de Pomis designed the whole thing, and the result is still breathtaking today.
Strolling through the old town, you can’t help but pause here. The whole ensemble gives you that southern, almost Italian vibe – only with pumpkin seed oil instead of Chianti.
Opening Hours
April – October: Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 – 17:00
Winter:Â Guided tours available on request via the Diocesan Museum (T +43/316/8041-890) or the parish office (T +43/316/821683).
👉 Bottom line: Whether you’re into history, architecture, or just love snapping pretty photos, the Mausoleum is a must-see. And honestly – where else in Graz can you get a quick dose of “Italian vibes” without driving across the Alps?
