The Kunsthaus Graz – Discover the “Friendly Alien” by Bike

Share:

When you cycle through Graz, you can’t miss it: a huge, round, blue-glittering blob that looks like it just landed from a sci-fi movie. Welcome to the Kunsthaus Graz, affectionately called the “Friendly Alien.”

Architecture with a wink

Designed by London architects Peter Cook and Colin Fournier, the Kunsthaus opened in 2003 as part of Graz’s year as European Capital of Culture. Instead of sharp edges or a classical façade, it features an organic, almost extraterrestrial shape – somewhere between a soap bubble, a submarine, and a spaceship. Its façade is made up of about 1,000 acrylic glass panels and lights up at night like a giant screen.

And yes, cyclists tend to smile: while locking up your bike nearby, you might find yourself wondering if Captain Kirk is about to step out.

What’s inside?

The Kunsthaus isn’t a museum in the traditional sense – it has no permanent collection. Instead, it hosts rotating exhibitions of contemporary art: installations, media art, and spectacular spatial concepts. The only guarantee? It’s never boring.

Kunsthaus Café – the local hotspot

Not just for art fans, but also for night owls and coffee lovers, the Kunsthaus Café has become a Graz institution. With its laid-back atmosphere, good drinks, and international crowd, it’s the perfect place to hang out, people-watch, and soak up the creative vibe of the city.

The Needle – a view above the city

A real highlight is the Needle: a glass walkway that pierces the building and offers breathtaking views over the Mur River, the Schlossberg, and Graz’s rooftops. Perfect for photos – or just for that floating-above-the-city feeling.

When the building talks…

Few people know this: the Kunsthaus actually makes noises. Thanks to its unusual construction, the Friendly Alien sometimes creaks, hums, or sighs softly, as if it were breathing. Stand nearby for a few minutes and you might just wonder whether there’s a UFO engine humming inside.

By bike to the Friendly Alien

The best part? The Kunsthaus is right on the Mur riverside cycle path. Just cruise along the river, stop at the Lendkai, and suddenly you’re face-to-face with the alien. From here, you can easily continue to the Murinsel or explore the trendy Lend district.

Conclusion

The Kunsthaus Graz is more than a building – it’s an experience. An extraterrestrial piece of art in the middle of the old town, easily reached by bike and full of surprises. Whether you’re into art, architecture, or simply searching for a good coffee: this stop is well worth it.

👉 So: park your bike, step inside, and meet the Friendly Alien – you might even hear it whisper. Share your shots of the Friendly Alien with the hashtag #BIKEGRAZKunsthaus – we can’t wait to see your views.
