Bikepolo is basically the urban cousin of traditional polo on horseback – only here no horses, but bicycles take center stage. But where does it actually come from? A quick look into history reveals: Bikepolo was invented as early as 1891 – yes, exactly, at a time when men still wore top hats and ladies elegant long skirts.
Did you know there was almost an Olympic Bike Polo tournament in 1916? The games were supposed to take place in Berlin, but World War I put a stop to it all. Imagine, Graz could have made the modern Bikepolo pros famous at the Olympics back then! Nope, not quite, but today the scene is really picking up momentum.

Today, Bikepolo is an urban, trendy sport that is taking off globally in big cities. Teams, usually made up of three to four players, compete on small, rectangular courts. With a bit of body contact, lots of skill, and clever swings with the mallet, they try to get the ball into the opponent’s goal. What really distinguishes Bikepolo is the community spirit – a wild mix of sporting ambition, fun, and the desire to be out and about together.
We’re especially happy that more and more women and girls in Graz are discovering the sport for themselves. Bikepolo knows no gender boundaries, and at the tournaments everyone joins in – from beginner to pro. So, “Girls, get on your bikes, ready, go!”

Get ready: On April 26th, it’s all about Bikepolo action here in Graz! At Volksgarten, everything will revolve around the ball on two wheels at the International BIKEPOLO Tournament. Drop by, cheer on the players, and enjoy the vibe of this cool sport. It’s definitely a great opportunity to get to know the scene – and who knows, maybe you’ll discover your new hobby.
At the same time, the famous Schlagergarten Gloria is happening nearby – great vibes guaranteed! But don’t forget, the highlight of the day is also the Cargo Bike Race at 1:30 PM in the traffic education park. It’ll be exciting to see how quick the cargo bike experts race through the course and show what their heavy machines can do.
