BIKEPOLO: Clubs, bikes and chaos in the Augarten?

Bike Polo Beginners’ Day: Sticks, Bikes and the Chaos of Graz

On 9 May 2026, it’s that time again: Graz is hosting a special beginners’ day for bike polo. For anyone who thought cycling was complicated enough, here comes the next level of physical challenge: a ball, a stick and the attempt not to fall flat on your face.

The good news for all the curious souls who’ve so far only glided elegantly along the Mur Cycle Path: there are bikes and sticks available to hire. So you don’t have to sacrifice your beloved fixie straight away or repurpose your grandma’s tennis racket. The organisers want to make it easy for you to get started, which is a good sign given the potential for a nasty fall.

Imagine this: a mix of ice hockey on wheels, only without the ice and with more patches of grass. The whole thing will probably take place somewhere in the countryside, perhaps even near the Augarten, where you’d normally see people having relaxed picnics. Now the ball will be chased there.

  • Want to know how to pedal, steer, keep an eye on the ball and try not to collide with the others all at the same time?
  • Are you ready for bruises that you can later proudly present as your ‘bike polo badges’?
  • Or do you just want to see how many balls you can ride over on a bike before you hit the target?

Whatever your motivation, the beginners’ day is your chance to get to know this unusual sport. And who knows, maybe you’ll discover a hidden talent. Or at least a new way to spend your weekends in Graz that’s guaranteed not to be boring.

Will you hop on your bike and swing that stick? Show us your bruises or your first goals! #bikegraz on Instagram or Bluesky.
