BiciBus Workshop: Learn to Cycle Together in Graz!
Okay, dear cyclists, pay attention! If you have always wanted to know how to make the school route safer and more fun for the little ones, then I have something for you: The city of Graz invites you to the free BiciBus workshop. On Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM, you can learn how to set up a BiciBus in your neighborhood.
What is this BiciBus anyway? Imagine your children do not cycle to school alone, but in an organized convoy with other students and their parents. A predefined route, boarding along the way – that’s the BiciBus. And the best part: It is super inclusive! Sibling children or kindergarten kids can join in. And if someone doesn’t have their own bike or needs support, there are special bikes available for rent at Bunten Rampe (for a fee) or cargo bikes at radverteiler.at (usually free) in Graz. So really everyone can join in, even if the Schlossberg looks steep, we won’t send you up there anyway.
By the way, the BiciBus is not a newcomer in Graz. It successfully operated to the Volksschule Jägergrund as early as Autumn 2022. And in 2023, there was a line that ran from Gösting and Andritz to Geidorf, serving schools like the Praxisvolksschule Augustinum, the Praxisvolksschule der PH Steiermark, and the VS Geidorf. This shows that the concept is well received here!
To ensure that a BiciBus runs smoothly, there are a few simple rules: Keep your phone in your pocket, eyes on the road, wear a helmet (mandatory for under 12 years, recommended for supervisors – role model effect and all that!), ride slowly and pay attention to others. E-bikes and e-cargo bikes are allowed for supervisors, but please keep it relaxed. E-scooters and e-skateboards are better left at home.
Since 2024, there is the Graz BiciBus service center of the city of Graz, which offers you free assistance if you want to organize a line yourself. They not only offer you the workshop but also digital templates, downloadable materials, and even BiciBus vests and bike parking signs for rent. And that’s not all: For the first two rides, an experienced accompanying team will join to ensure everything goes smoothly. You can also network with other organizers – because together is known to be stronger, even when the headwind is typically Graz.
At the workshop on September 26, you will learn everything you need to know: how to find co-organizers, plan a route, promote the line, and carry out the rides. And of course, there will be plenty of tips and tricks. Participation is free, and you can register at https://forms.gle/yWV1wQXG7JxSBCrT8.
So, if you feel like making the school route in Graz a bit more colorful and safer, then come by. Maybe it’s just the right occasion to get the bike out of the cellar again and let the kids hop on!
