Car-Free Day in Graz – the Main Square becomes a stage for mobility

Share:

On September 22nd, Graz joins the European Car-Free Day once again – and the city’s Main Square will turn into a lively stage for sustainable mobility. From 1 to 5 PM, there won’t be honking cars or traffic jams, but instead music, workshops, games, and plenty of inspiration for how to get around the city in a more climate-friendly way.

The afternoon will be hosted and animated by Antenne Steiermark, who will provide music and entertainment while guiding visitors through the activities. One of the highlights is the legendary “Silly Walk” at 2 PM – inspired by Monty Python, it invites everyone to try out their funniest, quirkiest walking styles. It’s a playful reminder that movement doesn’t always have to be serious – sometimes it can just be about fun.

Cyclists will also get their share of action: there’s a bike and balance-bike parcours, where kids and adults alike can test their skills and balance. Curious about cargo bikes? At the cargo-bike workshop, you can see how versatile these bikes are in daily life. Creativity also has its place: the silk-screen printing station lets you design your own T-shirts, and for the youngest visitors, the wood circus workshop promises fun, crafts, and games.

But the Car-Free Day isn’t just about fun – it’s also about learning and connecting. Local partners like the Environmental Office, Cycling Lobby, Climate Alliance, and Holding Graz will be there with information stands. They’ll share tips for sustainable urban mobility, updates on current projects in Graz, and be ready to answer all your questions.

The best part? The whole event is free – and it gives Graz residents a rare chance to experience their city center without cars. When the Main Square is free of traffic, you realize just how much space is available for people, for playing, for talking, and for enjoying the city together. For many locals, the Car-Free Day has become a September tradition – and maybe this year it’ll inspire you to leave the car at home more often, not just for one day.

So: come by, bring your family, test out the activities, and enjoy Graz in a new way.
