Auner Gravity Series: Schöckl calls all downhill riders
The Schöckl calls to true enthusiasts – or those who want to become one. On 2 May, which is practically now, the Auner Austrian Gravity Series kicks off its first round. Graz’s local mountain, which most of us know more for leisurely hiking or mountain biking along the forest trails, will then show its most exhilarating side.
The route takes riders over the infamous ‘1000er’ – and anyone familiar with it knows: this is no walk in the park. The finish line is at the Johann Waller Hut. So, anyone who hurtles down there either has nerves of steel or a very good health insurance package. Or both. Whilst we get annoyed by the sometimes surprising e-scooter slalom riders on the Mur Cycle Path or try to dodge the crowds of tourists in the main square, others are hurtling down the mountain. Respect, or madness, depending on your perspective.
Registration was open, and now it’s practically time. Anyone still wanting to join in at the last minute is probably out of luck. But watching is always an option. And let’s be honest, it’s much more relaxed. For us mere mortals, who are more concerned with not falling into potholes or dodging people jumping across the zebra crossings, this is in a league of its own. But it’s good to know that our Schöckl is also up to the task for such spectacles.
