Schauspielhaus Graz

The traditional spoken theater at Freiheitsplatz has been performing since 1825 – behind a classical façade.

History

The Schauspielhaus am Freiheitsplatz is the most important spoken theater in Styria. It opened in 1825 as the Ständisches Theater, after its predecessor, the Theater am Tummelplatz, burned down. The neoclassical facade, along with the monument of Kaiser Franz I., characterizes the Freiheitsplatz between Burg and Karmeliterplatz. After a fire in 1823 during construction and severe damage in World War II, the building was remodeled several times; the last major renovation expanded it with modern rehearsal stages. Today, the Schauspielhaus operates three stages and regularly ranks among the most notable theaters in the German-speaking world with its productions – it has been awarded "Theater of the Year" multiple times. Around the Freiheitsplatz, there are bike parking spaces, and the old town attractions Burg, Dom, and Sporgasse are within immediate walking distance.
