The Landeszeughaus was built from 1642 to 1645 by Antonio Solar and served to arm the Styrian estates against the threat from the Ottoman Empire. With around 32,000 objects – armor, helmets, swords, rifles, and pistols from the 15th to 18th centuries – it is the largest preserved historical armory in the world. What is unique is that the inventory is stored almost in its original condition across four floors, just as it was once kept ready for emergencies: up to 16,000 men could be equipped here. When Maria Theresa wanted to dissolve the armories of the empire, the Styrians succeeded in 1749 in having theirs preserved as a memorial site. Today, the Zeughaus is part of the Universalmuseum Joanneum and can be found right next to the Landhaus on Herrengasse.
