Grazer Stadtpark

The green lung of the city: The Stadtpark connects the Altstadt and Universitätsviertel with old avenues, fountains, and meadows.

History

The Stadtpark was created starting in 1869 on the glacis, the once open firing range in front of the city fortifications, and today it is the green lung of Graz. Spanning over 20 hectares, it connects the old town with the university district – interspersed with old tree-lined avenues, meadows, and walking paths. In the center, the magnificent Stadtpark fountain made of French cast iron splashes, which was showcased at the 1873 Vienna World's Fair and later purchased by the Grazer Sparkasse for the city. Numerous monuments commemorate poets and composers, and the Forum Stadtpark has been a center for avant-garde art since 1960. The friendly squirrels, known as the "Stadtpark-Hansis," are also famous. For cycling, the park serves as a central hub: several popular cycling routes between the center, Geidorf, and St. Leonhard intersect here under shady avenues.
